DIY Summer to Fall Trench Coat 🧥

Image of person wearing linen jacket

I finally sewed up this Simplicity trench coat pattern! It’s light and a great transition piece into Fall/Autumn. You can make this is in a variety of lighter fabrics, too.

The specific pattern number is Simplicity #8554. I have a full sewalong video that you can watch.

As with many sewing projects there are different ways to sew a garment. I mostly followed the pattern instructions, but made one or two small detours.

If you use this video for step-by-step sewing instructions, refer back to the Simplicity pattern instructions when in doubt. Also, trust your instincts! You are a great sewist!

The sewing project details are below!

Sewing pattern

Simplicity 8554

View

I made View B, without the “front overlay”.

Sizing

I made pattern size 14 with no adjustments, except the hem length. My measurements, and the ease of the pattern, would have put me at possibly 12 or maybe even 10 but I wanted this to be fully wrap-able and oversized.

Fabric

4C22 Rustic Ginger Softened – 100% Linen – Heavy (7.1oz)

Other notes

I made the belt but prefer to wear this without it. It is your choice!

Overall this came together relatively easily and was a true “simple” pattern from Simplicity. If you are brand new to sewing clothes or reading patterns, it might be a bit confusing, but nothing you can’t find answers to online (or check out my video above! 😊).
